What is Pinying?

Air GraphicAir Graphic

Pinying has overcome the linguistic hurdles between Chinese English learners and clear English phonetics. Through a new, patented method, Pinying empowers Chinese English learners to understand Standard American phonetics quickly and intuitively by splitting and re-sequencing Chinese sounds. Pinying recombines individual sounds from Chinese characters to produce clear English words through interactive word maps, customizable word lists, 3D graphics, interactive quizzes and a dictionary with over 130,000 English words. Download the free app, walk through the tutorial, take an interactive quiz and unlock the benefits of Pinying today.

About the Method: The Pinying method revolutionizes English education by bringing Mandarin and American English together though a one-to-one correspondence between their basic sounds. Characters are not a wall between Chinese and other languages; they are a bridge, and Pinying can help you cross it. Teachers throughout China consider teaching pronunciation the most challenging part of their job, and students complain that a poor grasp of pronunciation prevents them from speaking English. Pinying resolves these issues by using the knowledge students already have to unlock a deeper understanding of standard English pronunciation.

Pinying inventor Jonathan Stalling is a Professor of English at the University of Oklahoma specializing in Comparative Poetics and Translation Studies and is a core faculty of OU’s newly designed TESOL masters program. He is an editor of Chinese Literature Today magazine and book series and the Curator of the Chinese Literature Translation Archive. As an interlingual designer and poet, Dr. Stalling has published multiple books exploring the space between English and Chinese, wrote the world’s first simultaneously Chinese-English opera, Yingelishi, and was the first western Poet-in-Residence of Beijing University in 2015.
